A Community
The Chicago Photography Center (CPC) grew out of a photography program started at the Jane Addams Hull House in the fall of 1969. In mid-2002 CPC was founded by Hull House photography students and their instructor, Richard Stromberg. The group worked closely to customize its new location for a photography program, including build-out, design and the installation of darkrooms.
Since then, the program has expanded to include a growing digital photography curriculum, a lighting series, an introduction to flash photography and more. Many of the volunteers who helped this vision come to life have remained with CPC to this day, serving its community in a variety of ways, including as CPC instructors. Our instructors and volunteer staff come from a wide variety of photography backgrounds, sharing their professional and personal experiences with our students. A board of directors provides financial and strategic oversight to the organization.
CPC’s goal is to provide a vibrant and flexible learning environment for emerging and accomplished photographers throughout the Chicago area. We bring people together in an informal setting in which they can share their perspectives and develop their photography skills.
The Chicago Photography Center is a not-for-profit organization. Our facility includes classroom space, a computer lab, darkrooms, a lighting studio and a gallery featuring students’ work. We offer weekday evening classes and single-session workshops on evenings and weekend mornings.
Who We Are
CPC is a community of people who are passionate about photography, creativity, learning and sharing ideas. This is the best playground for photographers in Chicago.
Whether you are interested in the latest and greatest, state-of-the-art digital techniques, the traditions and craft of black and white film photography or specialized photography techniques like flash or portraiture, we are the place for you to learn and play.
What We Are
CPC teaches photographers the skills needed to create images which can impact and influence those who view them.
Participants from diverse backgrounds come together and create a culture that fosters exploration and discovery.
CPC encompasses technical training, critiques and gallery shows within a supportive community. The CPC community extends beyond bricks and mortar by offering photographic opportunities for community and charitable organizations.
