Advanced Studio Lighting (Lighting III) builds on the skills learned in CPC’s Creative Portraiture and Lighting, which is a prerequisite for the class along with CPC’s Fundamentals of Lighting.
Each class in the seven week course is structured as a studio session. You’ll use studio lights to create portraits of volunteer models, professional models and/or actors scheduled for the class by CPC. (Please note: Class participants are not eligible to act as class models.) In lieu of a monetary fee, class participants provide the models with portrait prints or a photo CD at the end of the session.
In the course of the session, you’ll create three kinds of portraits by:
1. Fulfilling a specific technical challenge assigned by the instructor (for example: making the model look young, backlighting the model, lighting the model primarily with reflected light)
2. Duplicating the lighting of an existing portrait; you may bring in portraits of your choosing or select from the array of portraits shown in class
3. Conceiving and executing a final portrait project of your own design
Experimentation with lighting equipment is encouraged; you may use CPC's lights and may also bring in lighting equipment of your own. All classes will be supervised by the instructor, but there will be very little formal lecture — the bulk of each class consists of working with lights and taking portraits. The instructor is a resource in class, but will mainly observe and allow the students do the work themselves.
Each week, three or four students will be allowed hands-on time with the lights; students who are not shooting on a given night are required to work as studio assistants.
Please note: Advanced Studio Lighting is taught at a professional photo studio outside of CPC. Enrollment is limited to eight students.
